The Object of the Crime: A biting comedy (review)

First day box office: Agnès Jaoui in the lead on a very weak Wednesday

Three French films and one South Korean film clearly did not encourage people to go to the theaters during this very hot day.

A week after its Out of Competition presentation at the Cannes Film Festival, The object of the crime takes the lead in this Wednesday’s new releases at the French box office.

The new film directed by Agnès Jaoui attracted 16,700 spectators for its first day of release, including previews, with a fairly low average of 12 admissions per screening.

Carried by Agnès Jaoui, Daniel Auteuil and Eye Haïdara, the film nevertheless starts very far from Public squarethe filmmaker’s previous feature film, which attracted 33,000 spectators on its first day in 2018 before ending its career at 535,000 admissions.

It must be said that this Wednesday will have been generally complicated for the new products. The very hot weather in recent days may not have encouraged spectators to go to the theaters.

Behind, the South Korean genre film Colony starts at just over 10,000 entries, with a similar average of 12 entries per session.

A rather disappointing score for Yeon Sang-ho, the director of the very popular Last train to Busanwhose latest film, Peninsula (the continuation of Busan) released in the complicated context of 2020, had done better with 12,200 entries for its first day.

Two other French releases are also struggling to find their audience.

On the third step of the podium, Mata starts with only 6,500 admissions for this action film directed by Eye Haïdara and Joséphine Japy.

Just behind, feel good comedy Everything is going great displays less than 4,000 admissions for its first Wednesday in theaters. A very small launch for Hakim Jemili, despite rather positive reviews.
