Finally, maybe Tom Hardy will be able to stay in MobLand

Helen Mirren shows her support for her comrade, the production tries to calm things down and negotiates so that the actor remains in the cast of the successful thriller from Paramount +.

No, Tom Hardy has not left MobLand. Anyway, not yet…

Despite the explosive announcements that have emerged in recent days around the Paramount+ crime series, Variety claims that the actor is still in discussions to return in a possible season 3.

“Tom has not been fired. The door is not closed for season 3 and creative discussions are underway,” assures a source close to the production.

For a week, however, Hollywood has been buzzing with stories of massive tensions around the series worn by Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren. Several leaks suggested a clash between Hardy, screenwriter Jez Butterworth and producer David Glasser, to the point of announcing his definitive departure. The reality would be more complicated… and much more chaotic.

Launched in 2025 on Paramount+, MobLand quickly established itself as one of the platform’s biggest successes. Season 2 has already been completed but has yet to air, while a season 3 was expected to go into production this fall with Hardy returning as gangster Harry Da Souza. Except that behind the scenes would have become explosive.

According to several sources cited by Variety, the tensions come from a mixture of problems: repeated delays by Tom Hardy on filming, frequent requests to rewrite scenes… but also scripts delivered very late by Jez Butterworth.

“Tom likes having time to prepare,” says a production source. Problem: some scripts arrived only a week before filming. Butterworth would also have been very little present on the set, complicating the management of the modifications requested by the actor:

“Often Tom’s ideas are very good. But he wants us to take them seriously. And Jez doesn’t really have time to manage these notes, so it becomes problematic.”

Another point of friction: David Glasser, a producer known for holding his productions with an iron fist, would have lost patience with the actor’s requests for rewrites and delays. According to a source, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren sometimes waited “for hours” for Hardy to arrive on set. But contrary to rumors appearing online, there is no open war between Hardy and Mirren.

“Helen is not that type of person,” insists a source close to the filming, also brushing aside the political rumors which circulated around the conflict. Moreover, the actress posted yesterday on Instagram a big declaration of love intended for Tom Hardy, as if to show that there is no problem within the casting of MobLand.

Despite everything, the matter remains extremely sensitive. Tom Hardy has long had a reputation as a difficult actor, particularly since his tensions with Charlize Theron on Mad Max: Fury Road. But several members of the production largely qualify this portrait:

“Tom sometimes gets a little lost in his own world. I don’t think he does that badly.”

Today, everyone is trying above all to avoid the definitive explosion. Guy Ritchie, executive producer and director of several episodes, would actively push to bring everyone back together. Because “Guy likes working with Tom,” summarizes a source. Although the series could theoretically continue without him, many consider Hardy essential to MobLand’s success.

“We could write his exit from the series… but it wouldn’t be very elegant.”

This would especially risk confusing spectators of the mafia thriller, which is still very largely based on the hyper charismatic performance of Tom Hardy.

Behind the scenes, some are already comparing the situation to Kevin Costner’s chaotic departure from Yellowstone. It now remains to be seen whether Hardy, Butterworth and Glasser will manage to bury the hatchet before the launch of season 3. One thing seems certain: at MobLand, the chaos is as much in front of as behind the camera.
