The Streets of Rage film is confirmed with the screenwriters of Sonic
Announced in 2022, the film adaptation of the legendary Sega video game seemed to have disappeared from the radar. But the project is still alive.
The movie Streets of Rage finally moving forward.
According to information revealed by Lionsgate, the studio has entrusted the screenplay to Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the authors of the trilogy Sonic at the cinema, which exceeded a billion dollars in revenue worldwide.
Directed by Jeymes Samuel, the filmmaker behind The Harder They Fall (the 2021 Netflix western) which was chosen to bring one of the most iconic games of the 1990s to the screen.
The details of the plot remain secret, but the project should rely heavily on what made the saga successful: its cult characters, its electronic soundtracks that have become legendary and its beat’em up type action where the heroes distribute blows in the streets infested with criminals.
Originally released on Mega Drive, Streets of Rage is considered one of Sega’s great classics. The license experienced a notable return in 2020 with Streets of Rage 4sold more than 2.5 million copies during its first year of operation.
The project, however, experienced some turbulence. Initially, the screenplay was to be written by Derek Kolstad, the creator of the franchise John Wick. His version was ultimately abandoned in favor of a new approach developed by Casey and Miller.
On the Lionsgate side, the enthusiasm is palpable: “We knew with our partners at Sega that Streets of Rage needed a bold director. Jeymes Samuel’s visceral and explosive style – not to mention his very particular use of music – is perfect for spectators who already know the license as well as for those who will discover it.”
No casting or release date has yet been announced.
