Obsession 2: is a sequel already in the works?

A real surprise phenomenon at the start of the summer season, the horror thriller has become the biggest success in the history of the small indie studio Tea Shop Productions. A triumph which now makes a sequel almost inevitable.

When a film exceeds all expectations, Hollywood usually has only one question: When will the sequel be released?

With more than forty productions to its credit since its creation in 2010, the Tea Shop Productions studio has never before experienced success comparable to that ofObsession : 210 million dollars in worldwide revenue, for a production budget of less than 1 million… It’s crazy. A phenomenon.

The horror thriller by Curry Barker has easily become the biggest success in the history of Tea Shop, far surpassing the performance of 47 Meters Downthe shark film with Mandy Moore which grossed more than $60 million at the worldwide box office in 2017. Obviously, faced with such success, the young studio is wondering and the question of a sequel is already starting to arise.

James Harris, one of the directors of Tea Shop Productions, recognizes in Variety that the idea of making a Obsession 2 is already in the air. But the rest is absolutely not in the pipeline at the moment:

I’m sure there will be a conversation around Obsession 2 very soon. And that discussion will happen sooner rather than later… But already, we’ll have to see when Curry will be available, because I think he currently has more meetings than he can handle…

In other words, nothing has been officially launched yet, but the idea of a sequel will slowly gain ground.

The whole question being how to bring Curry Barker home. The prodigy director from YouTube will now be in high demand in Hollywood. The historic success ofObsession changed the situation. And besides, even before the film exploded, Curry Barker had already shot his second feature film: Anything But Ghostsa supernatural horror film starring Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard, which wrapped production last April. A feature film produced by the Blumhouse studio, the major horror company in the American industry (behind Insidious etc.). Obviously, the filmmaker risks being offered bigger projects in the future:

I’m sure he can get huge budgets for his next project.” smiles the producer of Tea Shop.

But it won’t be at Tea Shop Productions. The studio has no intention of changing its editorial line, even for Obsession 2. He wants to continue to focus on ambitious genre films directed by young emerging talents, as he has done in recent years with Ruth Paxton, Emmanuelle Pickett and Jordan Downey. But the triumph ofObsession should still make many things easier for them:

Success opens doors and makes certain discussions much simpler.”explains Harris. When a film works, agents start sending you bigger projects and actors look at your scripts with new eyes.”
