The Coen brothers will receive the 2026 Lumière Prize
The authors of Fargo, The Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men will be celebrated in Lyon this fall. For the first time since the Dardenne brothers in 2020, the Lumière Prize will distinguish a duo of filmmakers.
The 2026 Lumière Prize will be awarded to Joel and Ethan Coen, announced the organizers of the Lyon festival. The two American directors will receive the prestigious award next October during the 18th edition of the event.
With this distinction, the Coen brothers join an impressive list which includes Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Jane Fonda and even Michael Mann, awarded last year.
“The adjective cult seems to have been invented for themunderlines the Lumière institute in its press release. “If they have received a Palme d’Or, three Directing Prizes and a Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as four Oscars, it is above all the popular fervor, the attachment of spectators to their films and their impact on contemporary culture which establishes them in the firmament of cinema superstars. Outstanding storytellers, master screenwriters, their sense of humor, their style, their mastery of storytelling, the use they make of music, as well as the troupe of actors who surround them (among whom Frances McDormand, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Jeff Bridges, Billy Bob Thornton, John Turturro, Steve Buscemi, Josh Brolin or Tilda Swinton…): everything is extraordinary about these two artists, each of whom film is an event.”
After the brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne in 2020, Joel and Ethan Coen thus become the second duo of directors to receive the Lumière Prize, an award often considered a veritable Nobel of cinema.
