In your footsteps: the end of the Netflix series explained
Sam Worthington looks back at the end of “I Will Find You” which was a hit on Netflix and has fun imagining a season 2.
The new thriller adapted from a novel by Harlan Coben (I Will Find You) is one of the big hits of this early summer on Netflix.
Following in Your Footsteps follows David Burroughs (Sam Worthington), a father imprisoned for five years for the murder of his son Matthew. But when he discovers that the child may still be alive, he escapes from prison with the help of his sister-in-law Rachel (Britt Lower) to discover the truth.
Warning spoilers for the end of the series…
Who kidnapped Matthew?
The latest episode reveals that the kidnapper is none other than Hayden (Milo Ventimiglia), Rachel’s wealthy ex-boyfriend. Obsessed with the idea of having a child, he kidnapped Matthew and raised him as his own son for years, going so far as to kill anyone who threatened to reveal the truth. In the finale, Hayden even murders her own mother and a detective to protect her secret! A deliberately excessive outcome, as Sam Worthington recognizes.
“The series begins quite realistically, then it almost becomes an opera! When Hayden kills his mother and a detective from another country, we understand that we have moved into another genre,” laughs the actor in a long interview with Variety.
Do David and Rachel end up together?
Over the course of the episodes, a bond arises between David and Rachel, to the point that some spectators imagined a love story. The last shot, where the two characters hold hands, further fueled speculation. But Sam Worthington is much more reserved:
“She’s his sister-in-law, so I always found the idea a bit strange,” he explains. “I think we rejected the idea of a big romantic kiss. It would have turned the show into a telenovela rather than a melodrama.”
For the actor, this simple outstretched hand above all symbolizes hope and the fact that the two characters have finally found a little peace after their nightmare.
Is a season 2 possible?
Like most Harlan Coben adaptations, the thriller In Your Footsteps was designed as a mini-series and no season 2 in sight. But Sam Worthington has fun imagining a sequel:
“This kid is going to need a lot of therapy! Can you imagine: Matthew was taken from a life of luxury and brought back to a modest home in Boston. Isn’t he likely to blame David in the end?!”
