Hideo Kojima defends Supergirl

The famous video game director compares the new DC film to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) “where heroes, villains and villains all eventually converge.”

Despite a much more mixed critical reception than that of Supermanthe new DC Universe film by James Gunn has found strong support: Hideo Kojima.

The creator of video games Metal Gear Solid And Death Strandingwhose movie reviews on social networks have become small events for his fans, published a very positive message after discovering Supergirl in IMAX.

While Craig Gillespie’s space opera only has 56% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the famous Japanese game designer took the opposite view of the American press.

I saw Supergirl in IMAX. This is not a ‘superhero movie’ where we save the Earth through self-sacrifice, where ‘justice’ faces ‘evil’. It’s an initiatory story about someone trying to save herself: Kara, who is struggling with her own traumas.”

Kojima also believes that Craig Gillespie’s film is much different from what one might expect from a classic superhero adventure:

In its structure, the film resembles less Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), where everyone acts purely out of survival instinct beyond good and evil, as in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), where heroes, villains and villains all eventually converge.”

Regulars of Kojima’s X account know it: when he takes the time to write several lines on the themes, characters or setting of a film, it’s generally a good sign. Conversely, when he doesn’t like a feature film, he often settles for a sober one: “I saw it.”

A great defense for Supergirlwhich will be released in French theaters next Wednesday and still hopes to convince the public despite a sluggish start at the American box office and divided reviews to say the least.
