Attachment on Canal Plus: a great delicate and bright melo (critic)

A major work on mourning and life that continues despite everything, sublimated by the interpretation of Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Pio Marmaï and Vimala Pons.

A few months after its cinema release, the attachment arrives this Wednesday evening on Canal Plus (and streaming on MyCanal). Presented in 2024 at the Venice Mostra, this brilliant chronicle on paternity was acclaimed by the press (of which first) and met with a great success in theaters, attracting nearly 800,000 spectators. Our criticism:

Carine Tardieu traces her furrow somewhat under the radars while her films (mom’s head, wind in my calves, take me out of doubt and young lovers) all found their audience. Why this lack of recognition? Undoubtedly paradoxically because of what constitutes its major asset: this ability to deal with the most banal things of our lives (the couple, parenting, family …) by fading behind their characters and chiseled stories. But with this adaptation of Alice Fernay’s intimacy, she crosses a new level.

His first scene could augur a comedy. Sandra, an independent quinqua, childless and happy to be found it to have to keep that of a couple whose woman leaves to give birth, Elliott. The baby will be born but the mother will not survive it. And Attachment will therefore tell the impact of this brutal disappearance on the lives of those who remain. Including this widowed father, his difficulty in kissing this position then in bringing a new woman into her life. And this neighbor to which Elliott is attached to the point of making her a family member, with the ambiguities that this creates.

Never programmatic, the attachment turns out to be so brilliant in what is said to be there in what is being silent there. In this way of facing the emotion of the front without forcing the line and the tears. Like this way of causing actors of an eruptive nature (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Pio Marmaï and Vimala Pons) on a field of which they are not very customary: this internalized pain which reveals new things of them.

De Carine Tardieu. With Valeria Bruni- Tedeschi, Pio Marmaï, Vimala Pons… Duration 1h45.
