Cancellation of the Black Panther series: bad news for Okoye

The TV boss for Marvel Studio announces that Danai Gurira will not be entitled to his spin-off on Disney Plus.

Coup against the general of Dora Milaje! Marvel will not make a series of series on Okoye, one of the heroines of the saga Black Pantherembodied by the star of Walking Dead,, Danai Gurira. The project is canceled, officially reports Brad WinderbaumResponsible for streaming, television and animation at Marvel Studios:

“I love Okoye. I think fans will be delighted to see her again, but it will not be in a television series … I can’t say where or when, but there are still a lot of things to wait impatiently”.

In May 2021, rumors circulated that Danai Gurira had signed a contract to play in a Disney+ series on the origins of his character. The project would have been developed by Ryan Coogler, screenwriter and director of Black Panther. Two years later, in 2023, Gurira had hinted in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that the series was a possibility, without officially confirming its existence.

It seems that the project simply did not succeed.

However, everything is not lost for fans of Wakanda. A animated series entitled Eyes of Wakanda is still planned for Disney+ for August 6, 2025. Composed of four episodes, it will mark the start of phase 6 of the MCU.
