César 2025: the lack of directors is (still) feeling

This year, no woman was appointed in the prestigious categories of the best film and the best production.

THE Collective 50/50a French association which fights for equality and inclusion in cinema and audiovisual, alert on The lack of women appointed to the 2025 César. The observation is clear: no director is selected in the category of best movie or best achievement. Same thing for those of the best adaptation, the best visual effects, or the best animated feature film.

A single woman is named for the César for the best photograph, the best decor and the best foreign film. We will note that Louise Courvoisier (For Twenty gods) And Agathe Rieddinger (For Raw diamond) are in competition for the César for the best first film. The collective written on an Instagram post:

“In 2024, we praised the efforts made by the Academy to go towards more parity, however this blatant lack of diversity of creation does not reflect the reality of French cinema. It is important to recall that these appointments are the result of a vote. Also, to open the cinema doors to larger, so that more stories are rewarded, we encourage the greatest number of people eligible to join the César Academy next year. The change will not be without you! ”

Fabienne Silvestreco -founder and director of Lab Female cinema (another think tank on parity in audiovisual), expressed itself on the situation for The French film. Above all, it highlights a substantive problem, and not a lack from the César Committee:

“The Academy of César is for nothing. The César are above all a showcase and a magnifying mirror of the state of French cinema (…) It is true that we are in a year when there have been fewer films of directors who had a great success than 2023, but this observation also raises the question of budgets allocated to the films of directors. The vast majority of films with a high budget have, this year again, were worn by men (…) I do not think that the absence in the two master categories is linked to the typology of voters since 45% of them are now women. The stake is upstream. “

Indeed, how to face the Count of Monte-Cristo (more than 9 million entries in France), or Love phew (more than 4.7 million admissions))? Directors Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière, Gilles Lellouche, Jacques Audiard, Boris Lojkine and Alain Guiraudie, leave no room for women filmmakers. A rarity since the 2010s (only 2014 and 2023 were in this case). Coralie Fargeat could have been quoted if The substance had been eligible … but it is not a French production.

Why is Emilia Pérez named everywhere and the substance only in a foreign film?

“These nominations once again demonstrate a certain blockage. This blockage is unfortunately the perfect demonstration of figures that we frequently relay: women represent one in two people in cinema schools, one in three for the realization of the first short film, one in four for the first and second feature films and a On only six from the third feature film ”Fabienne Silvestre analysis.

Women are much more present in the categories of short films and documentaries: 8 of the 10 short films selected are made by women and 3 out of 6 documentaries are carried by directors. As Fabienne Silvestre concludes:

“It remains to be hoped that the hidden gift of this failed meeting will be to react and reflect the financiers of French cinema and that we finally attack the systemic causes which make women do not have access to film to big Budget and win after their short or go no further than a first long promising … ”

It will be possible to follow the 50th ceremony Friday February 28clear on canal.
