Paradise explained: Sterling K. Brown tells us the huge twist

What should be understood by the first episodes of the new Mystery series of Disney Plus? The interpreter of agent Xavier Collins tells us everything.

Just launched on Disney Plus, the new series of Dan Fogelmanthe creator of This is usalready has its small effect. Paradise tells the assassination of a young American president (James Marsden), visibly withdrawn from political life. But reality is not the one it seems to Paradise. The actor Sterling K. Brown explains everything to us.

Attention spoilers!

First: it’s complicated to do an interview on a series like Paradise ? You have to weigh each of your words …
Sterling K. Brown
: Let’s say that I can talk about the spirit of the series, the general tone … (laughs). Fortunately, now that the first three episodes have been broadcast on Disney Plus, it’s still simpler!

Can you explain to me this spectacular end of episode 1 and this huge twist that changes everything?
The president is killed while my character, agent Xavier Collins from the secret services, was supposed to protect him. He is the main suspect, because he is the last to have seen him alive. We understand that Xavier had become a friend of the president, especially after he took a bullet for him. So that the president brought him into the confidence of a huge national secrecy: a natural disaster will ravage the earth. To protect it, the government has built a gigantic shelters, inside a mountain, in Colorado. A shelter that can accommodate 25,000 survivors! It is the big revelation of episode 1: what we thought was normal life in this small town is not normal life. It’s the end of the world. And only a pocket of people survived.

Inevitably, the question arises is: is there still survivors outside?
So there … I can’t say too much. Let’s say that in episode 4, there is talk of an expedition …

What was your reaction when you read the crazy script of Paradise For the first time?
I knew absolutely nothing about history! I was taped. Dan Fogelman called me one day to tell me that he had written this thing and asked me to take a look. Because he had written the role of Xavier thinking of me. He warned me that it was very different from This is us (laughs). So I started to immerse myself in this story of murder of the president. It was crazy. And then I arrive at the end of episode 1 and I then realize in which place this story really happens. Immediately, it brought me back to the day I read the pilot of This is us For the first time, with its great ending twist. And there I say to myself: what a bastard! Dan still managed to get me! I let myself have completely. I had not seen anything coming once! I reminded him right away and I told him that I was ready to do it.

Are you a customer of this kind of “mystery” series as a spectator?
Downright ! Because it’s not just a thriller, where we try to find who killed the president and why. It is also a political series, in which we try to guess who really holds power and which shoots the strings behind the scenes.

Xavier Collins is very different from Randall Pearson, your character from This is us ! He carries this very strong intensity in him. How did you play it?
This intensity is also linked to his job. It must be concentrated all the time, on the alert. He must expect the worst permanently. And then he is not in a position to speak and say what he thinks. It is at the bottom of the ladder, at the White House or Paradise. So he listens. He observes. From this inherent calm is born a form of serenity that is reflected on the screen.

Season 1 of Paradise is broadcast every Tuesday on Disney more in France.
