Despicable Me characters will never grow up!
Chris Renaud prefers to adopt the “Simpson” method.
Unlike Riley, the main character of the Disney-Pixar Vice versawho discovered the joys of adolescence and the puberty that accompanies it in Inside Out 2the three little girls adopted by the terrible Gru in Despicable Me will never experience this period commonly called the thankless age. Not even adult life.
Since their first appearance in 2010 and their next one this year, none of them have gained an inch. Curious extension in childhood, Deadline questioned the co-director of the first, second and fourth opus, Chris Renaudon this subject. The latter confirmed that Margo, Edith, Agnes and the youngest, Gru Jr, seen in the first images of the 4th opus, will not grow up. Instead of the method “Vice versa”it is to that of the Simpsons that the filmmaker appeals:
“We could do a story where Margo was 18 and going to college… But we decided to take the same approach as The simpsons where no one grows. They are frozen in time. I’ve seen the film with an audience quite a few times, and I don’t think people come out and see it as a problem, wondering: ‘Why hasn’t Margo grown up?’
It is true that in the phenomenon series, thirty-five seasons later, Maggie still remains a baby. But that didn’t stop the creators from imagining the child’s future and projecting her as an adult in certain episodes. So really no chance of seeing Gru’s children years later?
In this same interview, Chris Renaud also returned to the popularity of Minions designed like R2-D2 in Star Wars, and of the tik tok trend following the release of Minions 2 where spectators came to the cinema dressed in a costume. A real dress code well before Barbie and his audience wearing their most beautiful pink clothes.
Screened in preview at the Annecy Festival, Despicable Me 4 introduces a new villain, Maxime Le Max. Fresh out of prison, the latter is angry with Gru and will not hesitate to attack his family – which has grown with the arrival of Gru Jr. to accomplish his cruel revenge. The villain turned hero will have to protect his family with the (precious?) help of the Minions who are always present to save their master. All with lots and lots of humor.
The film will be released in theaters on July 10.
