Donald Glover: Bringing Fun Back to Star Wars
A fan of the saga, the actor who plays Lando finds that it is often “too serious”, especially when it comes to the Skywalkers. Will his solo film bring pure entertainment back to Star Wars?
Since the flop of Solo: A Star Wars Storyin 2018, its spin-off on Lando Calrissian, now played by Donald Gloverseems compromised. It was first discusseda series on Disney+but its director, Justin Simien (who also messed up last summer with The Haunted Mansion), recently left her. Now, the actor is preparing instead a film, co-writing it directly with his brotherStephen Glover. But Lucasfilm hasn’t given them the green light to shoot it yet.
Interviewed by the Wall Street Journal (his interview is to be seen herein the original version), Donald Glover delivers his own vision of Star Warsand explains what his solo film dedicated to Lando. If it ever happens.
“Actually, I would especially like it to be fun, does it begin. I am myself a fan of Star Wars and I think it’s important that we have more fun. It’s hard to have fun these days. It’s true, it’s complicated: there are a lot of terribly serious things happening in the world… but as human beings, I think that part of our experience is also in entertainment, that we have a responsibility in that regard. And I feel like there are gaps in that department.”
The 40-year-old comedian and rapper goes on to explain that ideally, his Lando film should be presented as “the antidote to overly serious Star Wars” :
“I adore Star Warshuh, but sometimes, it’s really super serious. Too much, even. As soon as it touches on the Skywalkers, for example, it’s so serious. Lando, I find that one of his best facets is that he’s a little rascal and that people can recognize themselves in that aspect of his personality. He’s capable of saying things like: ‘Dude, war sucks. I need money.’and that the public understands that. So there you go, I just want to bring some fun back into Star Wars. I wish this movie was funny.”
