Elden Ring: Alex Garland’s film has a release date and official casting

The film adaptation of the famous video game is confirmed with the director of Civil War at the helm.

If the live-action Zelda film is expected around the corner, another franchise of the same genre is impatiently awaiting its cinematic adaptation.

The live-action version of the cult dark fantasy game Elden Ringproduced by A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment, will be released in theaters on March 3, 2028, the studio announced today, specifying that the production will be shot for an IMAX experience.

It will begin this spring in the United Kingdom, with filming planned for around 100 days. The film’s budget is estimated at over $100 million.

At the helm, we will find Alex Garland, who wrote both the screenplay and the direction. Already accustomed to collaborations with A24 (Ex Machina, Men, Civil War, Warfare), the filmmaker is also a long-time fan of the game and is said to have personally proposed the project to Bandai Namco and FromSoftware.


So who will be in the film?

Casting-wise, Kit Connor will play the main role. The actor revealed in the Netflix series Heartstopper and also seen in Warfarewill be supported by the excellent Ben Whishaw from the James Bond saga and by Cailee Spaeny, recently seen in Alien: Romulus.

Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, but also many well-known faces like Jonathan Pryce, from Game of Thrones or Nick Offerman, of Parks and Recreationwill be present.

Produced by Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich (DNA), as well as George RR Martin and Vince Gerardis.

The film is directly inspired by the game universe, designed under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki and based on a mythology written by Martin. The press release recalls that the game offers exploration of vast environments, dungeons and a progression system based on challenges and exploration.

Another detail: filming videos have already shown sets representing the ruins of the Church of Marika, a central location in the game where Queen Marika plays a key role in the universe.

Released in 2022, the game Elden Ring has exceeded 30 million copies sold worldwide and remains one of the most awarded games in history.
