Justine Triet supported after her committed speech in Cannes
Before that, relations were more than tense between members of the government and Justine Triet. The director delivered a speech against pension reform on the occasion of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, after winning the Palme d’Or.
“This year, the country has been crossed by a historic, extremely powerful, unanimous protest against pension reform. This protest has been denied, and repressed in a shocking way. And this pattern of increasingly uninhibited dominating power is breaking out in several areas: socially, but also in all other spheres of society, and cinema is no exception.” declared Justine Triet before adding: “The commodification of culture that the neo-liberal government defends is breaking the French cultural exception. I dedicate this prize to all young female directors, to all young directors, and even to those who today cannot make a film.“
Words which quickly caused members of the government to react. The Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak was said to himself “happy to see the Palme d’Or awarded to Justine Triet (…) But stunned by her unjust speech.”, via a post.
