Toy Story 5: the Pixar magic happens again (review)

French box office: Toy Story 5 and Minions 3 sweep away Supergirl

The new DC film completely misses its launch while the diptych of The Battle of Gaulle now seems to be well underway.

It’s the start of the summer holidays and as expected, they still benefit animated films.

For its third week of operation, Toy Story 5 largely retains the lead at the French box office with 630,000 new admissions. Despite a decline of 40%, the new Pixar has already crossed the threshold of 2.7 million spectators and is heading straight towards a very big score, even if it is far from the peaks of Toy Story 4, which already stood at 3.5 million fans at the same stage in 2019 (4.5 million at the end of his career).

Still enough to still maintain a distance Minions and Monsters who keeps his second place. Illumination’s feature film still attracts 520,000 spectators in its second week and is now approaching 1.5 million admissions. This is well below the scores of previous installments of the franchise: Despicable Me 4 had already passed the 2 million mark last year at the same time (4.4 million on arrival) just like Minions 2 in 2022 (almost 4 million on arrival).

The good surprise comes from The Battle of Gaulle: I write your name. Thanks to excellent word of mouth and well launched by the Fête du cinéma, the second film in the Pathé diptych jumped 36% and climbed to third place with more than 400,000 admissions, bringing its total to more than 810,000 tickets sold.

Knowing that the first part, The Battle of Gaulle: The Iron Agealso remains very solid with 290,000 additional entries and now exceeds 1.6 million spectators, the saga of The Battle of Gaulle is now close to 2.5 million cumulative entries.

On the other hand, it’s a cold shower for Supergirl.

The new film in the DC universe is off to a slow start. Clark’s cousin only managed to attract 255,000 spectators for its first week. With only fifth place, James Gunn’s new DC Universe opus starts half as well as Superman last year (580,000 entries after one week).

Note that behind it, Backrooms continues to fascinate and sees its attendance decline very slowly in the third week, with 240,000 additional entries. Kane Parsons’ horrific film now exceeds one million spectators in France. He runs after Obsession which now has 1.4 million entries after eight weeks. Let us emphasize that Disclosure Dayalso, has finally crossed the milestone of one million entries in France. Finally, the novelty License to destroy starts quietly with 130,000 entries.
