George Lucas reveals why Yoda speaks backwards!
The director reveals his secret, 45 years after the release of the counterattack empire and the birth of the Jedi master on the screen.

Recently invited to TCM Classic Film Festival 2025for an anniversary screening of the 45 years of The counterattack empire,, George Lucas confided to the presenter Ben Mankiewiczwhich asked him why Yoda thus reversed the order of words in his sentences. The creator’s response Star Wars is quite simple (via Variety) ::
“Because if he had spoken in normal English, people would not have really listened. But with an accent, or a phrasing difficult to understand, people focus on what is said”.
Lucas continues, specifying that Yoda represented thought in the film, so he had to find a way for the public to pay well to his words:
“It was sort of the philosopher of the film. I had to find a way so that people really listen to him – especially the 12 -year -old kids.”
So he had the idea of reverse the words from his replicas. Smart it is.
