Grey’s Anatomy: why Amelia will disappear (for a while)
Actress Caterina Scorsone and her character are going to take a vacation, far from Seattle.
Dr. Shepherd is taking a break — and it’s announced.
Caterina Scorsone, famous Amelia from Grey’s Anatomy for a decade, will be leaving for several episodes and several months.
She is going on sabbatical after the drama which opened season 22 and will not return to the screen until 2026. According to the American press, her absence will extend over 8 consecutive episodes. In detail, Caterina Scorsone will be in 10 of the 18 episodes of the season, compared to 14 for most veterans of the cast.
This reduction in appearances is not linked to a shortage of authors, but to a scripted economy, within a framework of strict production cost management. Grey’s Anatomy can only continue by controlling its payroll, that is to say by ensuring that its alumni – who earn several tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars per episode – are not too present. This is a rule applied in several series that have been running for a long time: veterans of the cast are guaranteed a minimum of 14 episodes. Here, Amelia’s absence was thought of as a narrative arc. In the episode that kicks off her break, she admits to Richard: “I haven’t taken a day off in four years… I’m going somewhere, where my loved ones are.”
Which implies a return to Los Angeles, where Amelia made her debut in Private Practice, the spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy where the character was created almost 20 years ago.
Showrunner Meg Marinis also made the diagnosis and the direction she has in store for her character: “This season, she has been mainly in the medical field. We will see if her relentlessness in chaining cases continues after what happened to Dylan. I think it’s a moment of pride for her. She took charge of something that perhaps she should not have operated on from the start.”
In other words: Amelia’s break is as much economic as it is narrative. Caterina Scorsone remains a regular on the team. And his temporary sideline should allow him to return with a stronger bow.
Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy has just started and it will be seen in France on TF1.
