How did Dog 51 get off to a good start at the French box office?

The new thriller by Cédric Jimenez faced stiff competition this Wednesday, against Arnaud Desplechin, the first film by Kristen Stewart, the new comedy by Kev Adams or the new cartoon by Sylvain Chomet.

There were lots of people in French theaters this Wednesday. A host of new releases carried by notable headliners tried to make their way to the spectators. And faced with this increased competition, Cédric Jimenez’s new thriller doesn’t leave its share to the dog.

Dog 51 comes first, with just over 50,000 admissions, in a vast number of more than 600 rooms. A good launch, which still remains half as much as the beginnings of November (2022) and North Bac (2017) who managed to pass the 100,000 spectator mark on the first Wednesday.

Dog 51 still displays the best average per copy (77) by far, and leaves a good distance Two Pianos. The new Arnaud Desplechin has only 13,000 admissions in 250 theaters, despite very good reviews. That said, the director has never made a big hit. His latest films have all had fewer than 300,000 spectators and his record remains A Christmas Story (2008), which had a total of 550,000 curious people.

We can note in this ranking the low score of Black Phone 2which has 10,000 entries. The sequel does much less than the original horror film, which attracted 25,000 fans on its first day in 2021.

Boosted by a major tour of cinemas and a host of previews (17,000 admissions in advance, that’s enormous), Kev Adams is doing well with his D-day. The French military comedy has more than 25,000 fans. It’s better than the comedian’s last film, Some like him baldwith Michael Youn, who debuted at 17,000 this summer.

The previews also helped the launch of Sylvain Chomet’s new masterpiece. The director of Belleville Triplets is back with Marcel and Mr. Pagnolwhich totals 16,000 entries, three-quarters of which come from AVPs.

Finally, for her first steps behind the camera in France, Kristen Stewart is doing what she can. Even if his first achievement was praised, the star of Twilight is satisfied with 3,000 tickets sold for The Chronology of Water.
