In the backstage of adolescence: how were the Netflix series sequence plans filmed?
Stephen Graham tells us about the little secrets of a production like no other.
It is a brilliant series not to be missed on Netflix. Adolescence is online on the platform and will take you in guts, by its visceral history and its raw emotion, extraordinarily sincere.
But if Adolescence War a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes today, it is also because its staging is a tour de force. The mini-series of four episodes was filmed in four sequence plans. The camera takes us to the heart of the tragedy and keeps us going, in real time, at four precise moments of the investigation into the Jamie Miller case.
Stephen Grahamwhich embodies Jamie’s dad, was initiated by the series, co-creator and producer. He explains how production made these sequence plans, for three months of millimeter production.
“It is a very special filming method, because for each episode, we had set up a plan for three weeks”, tell Stephen Graham At first, before detailing the process in question:
“The first week, we had a week to repeat together. We cleared the script in a meticulous manner, with Jack Thorne (the scriptwriter), on the set. This gave us the opportunity to analyze the characters, the situations, and to ask questions if necessary. So we were really able to go deep in the text to understand it entirely. The second week, we choreographed a ballet, in harmony and in harmony, Cameraman had to be all involved in the process. To succeed in capturing a flash in a bottle! that’s just what we tried to do. “
Capture the moment. The moment of the human tragedy that is played out among the Miller, while their son faces terrifying accusations. The whole casting is in tune in Adolescenceto deliver exceptional performance, in an incredibly choreographed setting. Pure happiness for Stephen Grahamwhich has a delighted memory of these weeks of so special filming:
“It is really a very collaborative staging where each department is of the same importance: the actors, the sound engineers, the cameras … Everyone has a crucial role when the whistle sounds and that you have to get started. But when you have managed to put it in a box, it is really a unique feeling. The strongest experience to live for an actor. It’s a bit like being on a theater scene … simply.”
Netflix has already put the making-of of the series online, which shows how it was all staged, episode after episode.
It should be noted that the director ofAdolescence is none other than Philip Barantinwho had already tried the experience with The chef (2021), film behind the scenes of a kitchen comprising a single sequence shot of 1 h 34 min. Stephen Graham was already adventure.
Adolescence is to be seen at the moment on Netflix.
