In the line of the guard, a strong, intense and never didactic film on violence against women, carried by a trio of remarkable actors.
It is never easy to seize a subject as strong as violence against women and the grip – moral as physical – that some men can have on their companions. Precisely because the essential side of what is told there is not enough to make a good film and you have to find a tone, an angle, to transcend it in order to make it feel better. This is what succeeds here for her first long Nathalie Najem who had already told a devastating passion in a means, Baby lovein 2016. We follow here a young woman, Laura, apparently finally awarded a toxic relationship having rotten her life and that of her daughter. Until she sees her life in her life buried when Shirin the new girlfriend of her ex Joachim, also victim of a devastating grip, calls her for help.
From this inextricable initial situation, Nathalie Najem weaves a story that is both relentless and devoid of any Manicheism on domestic violence. By the quality of the writing of his characters, as rich in nuances as in paradoxes. And by the successful bias to gradually switch the story in a Sufferrtrt thriller with a Nice English walk transformed into a predation zone by Joachim, ready for anything so that Laura reveals to him where Shirin is hiding. But none of this would be possible without interpreters capable of embodying the nuances of their characters, those which prevent this story from being content to drive open doors. Zita Hanrot and Alexia Chardard are of this caliber alongside a Bastien Bouillon- which Nathalie Najem had already directed in Baby love – which impresses by his way of passing in an instant from the (false) sweetness to the brutal of violence, mental as physical.
