Jack Black Reacts to Mario Critics: ‘What Movie Did They See?’
The actor is preparing his role for the film Minecraft, also adapted from a video game.
We all listened to the hit “Peaches” sung with passion by Jack Black alias Bowser in Super Mario Bros.. This animated blockbuster adapted from Nintendo’s video game license exploded at the global box office with revenue of $1.36 billion and more than 7 million admissions in France last year.
In full preparation of the film Minecraftalso adapted from the video game of the same name, Jack Black explained to Total Film the difference between the two experiences: “They’re both related to video games, but in terms of approach, live action is a very different whole”. The actor goes on to talk about his relationship with the film’s director: “I’m really looking forward to getting back into the creative space with Jared Hess, the director. We worked together on Nacho Free years ago. It’s been fun playing with Jared.”
Despite the astonishing success of Super Mario Bros. Among the public, critics were much harsher towards the film. Jack Black recounts the difference of opinions between his discovery of the film in a test screening and the opinions of the critics: “They screened it for me a month before its theatrical release. I said to myself : ‘We have a success on our hands.’ I laughed and smiled throughout this movie.”
“And then it came out and it got horrible reviews. I said to myself : ‘What movie did they see?’ Luckily the world didn’t listen Rotten Tomatoesand it was one of the biggest hits of all time”, reassures the star. After all, the public always has the last word.
The film Minecraft is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 2, 2025 and the cast will bring together Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker) And Emma Myers (Wednesday).
The makers of the Minecraft film want to avoid a Sonic-style controversy
