Kong and Godzilla continue to roar at the US box office
The latest opus, Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire, maintains its lead with impressive scores.
The Titans keep in shape! For its second weekend in North American theaters, Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire retains the number 1 position at the US box office. The Kaijus left no chance for the competition and raked in $31 million more, to pass the $130 million mark across the Atlantic.
An impressive score, especially since the film has already grossed $361 million worldwide. Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire already does almost as well as Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters (387 million in 2019). It should easily exceed Godzilla vs. Kong (470 million in 2021) and even has a good chance of reaching the “MonsterVerse” franchise record, held by Kong: Skull Island (568 million in 2017).
As a result, Dev Patel bows. His action film Monkey Man (which will be released in France on April 17) had an average launch, just passing the $10 million mark for its first weekend in American cinemas.
On the third step of the podium, Ghostbusters: The Ice Threat makes resistance. Failing to post big numbers, the last part of the saga allows Sony Pictures to avoid a big flop. Grossing another 9 million dollars in its third week, the film is slowly moving towards 100 million at the US box office. It is the international results which are worrying, however, since Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire currently only totals $140 million at the worldwide box office. It must be said that the feature film has not yet been released everywhere. In France, for example, it will only arrive in theaters next Wednesday
Finally, we will note that the other big news of the week, in the USA, The curse: the origin (French release on April 10) settles for 4th place. The prequel to The Omen takes just $8 million for its first weekend. Weak, even for a horror film.
