Lily Gladstone could make cinema history with Killers of the Flower Moon
Thanks to Martin Scorsese's film, she could be the first actress of indigenous origin to win an Oscar.
Martin Scorsese saw her in Some women, Kelly Reichardt's fresco about four modern heroines in Montana in the 2010s. Six years later, Lily Gladstone broke the screen in Killers of the Flower Moonthe new historical fresco from the director of Taxi Driverpresented out of competition at Cannes last May.
From her first screening there was loud applause for the actress, who illuminates Martin Scorsese's filmand who had difficulty hiding his tears within a euphoric Théâtre Lumière.
Were we witnessing the birth of a star live? In Killers of the Flower MoonLily Gladstone is Mollie, wife of Leonardo DiCaprio's character (Ernest Burkhart), a woman of the Osage people who must face a series of horrific murders within her community.
Variety then explained that if Lily Gladstone found herself nominated for an Oscar for best actress or best supporting actress, she could mark a turning point in the history of cinema. It's done: she is even favorite in this first category, even if the performances of Sandra Hüller in Anatomy of a Fall or Emma Stone in Poor Creatures are also praised by the critics. Annette Bening is also cited for Nyadjust like Carey Mulligan for Maestrobut they are less favorites.
During the ceremony season, the best actress awards mainly honored Lily and Emma, notably during the Golden Globes. We'll quickly find out, since the 96th Oscars ceremony will take place this Sunday, March 10.
To wait, here is how winning this statuette would be historic for Lily Gladstone, and for the history of American cinema.
There have been more actresses nominated for Oscars thanks to Martin Scorsese than actors
The American actress descends from a long line of Native American people, the Pikunis, who are part of the Blackfoot Confederacy, but also from the Nez Perce tribe, Native Americans of the Penutian group who mainly lived in Montana. The representation of indigenous peoples in the history of cinema remains very weak today.
She could therefore be the first indigenous actress to win an Oscar, and only the second nominated in history after Jocelyne LaGarde, a Tahitian actress nominated in 1966 for the film Hawaii by George Roy Hill. Now all that remains is to wait a few hours to find out if Lily Gladstone could definitely make history.
Leonardo DiCaprio was not nominated this year for his role as Ernest Burkhart, although qualified by many media as one of the best performances of his career, on the other hand, Robert de Niro is well in the running for supporting role for the the incarnation of his uncle William Hale, also considered one of his best roles in many years.
