Marco Bellocchio’s new series unveils its trailer
After Esterno notte, the Italian director signs Portobello to be seen soon in France on Arte.
After Esterno notte, broadcast in 2023 on Arte, Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio signs Portobello, a new event mini-series devoted to one of the biggest legal cases in contemporary Italy. The series will soon be broadcast in France – again on Arte, which is co-producer – even if the first trailer was unveiled by HBO Max, holder of international broadcasting rights.
Premiered last September at the Venice Film Festival, where it was very favorably received by critics, Portobello was then shown at the Toronto and Busan festivals. This is the first Italian production labeled HBO Original, which is scheduled to be broadcast in Italy on HBO Max from February 20. Arte has not yet announced a French broadcast date.
The series traces the tragic destiny of Enzo Tortora, famous host of the Portobello show, broadcast on Italian television between 1977 and 1983. At the height of his popularity, Tortora was accused by repentants of being involved in drug trafficking linked to the Camorra mafia organization. Arrested, imprisoned, then plunged into an endless legal nightmare, he spent several years fighting before finally being fully acquitted.
The role of Enzo Tortora is played by Fabrizio Gifuni, regular collaborator of Bellocchio. The actor already met the filmmaker in Esterno notte, where he played the former President of the Italian Council Aldo Moro, kidnapped and murdered in 1978 by the Red Brigades.
With Portobello, director Marco Bellocchio continues his work of critical rereading of recent Italian history, combining political rigor, human tragedy and radical staging. Watch below:
