Max in France: which films and series on the new streaming platform?
The old HBO Max is finally arriving in France, with a rich catalog, which wants to highlight quality and will offer various original creations, which will be added to Friends, Harry Potter and other Game of Thrones.
Four years after the creation of HBO Max in the USA, and after its rebranding in just “Max“, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform is finally arriving in France. A few days before its official launch, on June 11, the group today presented the broad outlines of the content that will be available in the French catalog at the start. The general idea is not to “to be a streaming platform among many others. We firmly believe that watching quality content can transform the entertainment experience. We are committed to carefully selecting each content“, assures the President of Warner Bros. Discovery Western Europe & Africa, Clément Schwebig. A way of saying that Max will focus on quality and not quantity. So what will we see?
HBO series
Original HBO programs (which were on OCS in recent years and Prime Video with the Warner Pass recently) will now be found on Max. We are therefore talking about Game Of Thrones, The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Euphoria, True Detective: Night Country, The Regime and of course House of the Dragon, season 2 of which will begin in June. Max Originals series will also be offered as The Penguin (derived from the film The Batman) Or Welcome to Derry (on the clown Pennywise derived from IT by Stephen King) or the short stories pretty Little Liars or the series Dune: Prophecy, which will complete the saga of Denis Villeneuve (by the end of the year). Without forgetting the future series Harry Potter still in gestation and planned for 2026.
The cult series from Warner Bros. TV
After years of good and loyal service on Netflix, Friends will change creameries and move to Max from July 1st. We will also find other shows produced by Warner Bros. TV like The Big Bang Theory Or Mentalist Or His Dark Materials.
Original French creations
Like all American platforms, Max must invest in French production to be able to distribute in France. The platform has already announced 5 exclusive French original productions.
The first of these will be A devoted friend. Announced for a long time, it will be released in the fall of 2024. Laure Calamy will play a false victim of the Bataclan attack opposite Arieh Worthalter (César for best actor for The Goldman Trial). A mini-series produced by Just Philippot (The Cloud, Acid), which will be divided into 4 episodes.
In 2025, we will see Malditos, drama in 7 episodes. “In the south of France, the head of a gypsy community and her two sons fight to save their clan threatened with expulsion by rising waters. To survive, they will have to cross the boundaries of legality and fight in a dark and dangerous universe… while hiding the shameful secret that has haunted their family for seven years.” A series created by Jean-Charles Hue and Olivier Prieur and worn by Céline Sallette, Damien Bonnard and Jérôme Niel.
Another mini-series, adapted from the book Living with our deadwill be released in 2025. It will be 8 episodes and will follow “Léa, 28 years old, one of the rare female rabbis in France. Frail shoulders, great responsibilities since she must find answers in the labyrinth of life's small and big questions. But how can you be a guide for others when you are struggling with the fundamentals of love, family and yourself in search of meaning? Created by Noé Debré and Benjamin Charbit, it will bring together in the cast Elsa Guedj, Éric Elmosnino, Manu Payet and Noémie Lvovsky.
Merteuil will be Max’s big Franco-historical production. An adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, who will look back on the young years of the Countess de Merteuil. A 6-episode prequel starring Anamaria Vartolomei, Diane Kruger, Vincent Lacoste and Lucas Bravo. “To be the heroine of her own life, she will break the lives of others. The young Isabelle de Merteuil, humiliated by Valmont, loses her honor and her rank. Drunk with anger, she launches into a dizzying ascent, defying all morality and all power, from the libertine underworld to the court of Louis XV. On the documentary side, we will see Now or never: FC Montfermeil, a 5-episode mini-series following young footballers with dreams of glory. “The young people of the most legendary amateur football club have one season to achieve their dream: to become professional footballers. The countdown is on”
What films about Max in France?
Warner Bros. can draw from its vast catalog. We will therefore find classics like Casablanca, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner Or Matrixbut also more recent successes like A Star is Born, Gravity Or Fury Road. Above all, the platform will offer all the films in the franchise Harry Potter and also all the films from the DC Comics license, ranging from the trilogy Batman by Christopher Nolan Joker Passing by Aquaman & co.
What price for Max in France?
Max will be available on June 11 at the price of 6 euros per month with advertising, 10 euros standard with two simultaneous streams and 14 euros premium with four simultaneous streams.
