Robert De Niro really spanked Leonardo DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon

The director of photography Rodrigo Prieto confided in Insider regarding this spanking scene from Killers of the Flower Moonwhich is not unanimous.

“There was padding on his butt, but you could see De Niro was really hitting him,” explains Rodrigo Prieto.

In the new drama of Martin ScorseseErnest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) clumsily implements an assassination plan which ends in disaster. His uncle William King Hale (Robert DeNiro) is frustrated that his nephew is neglecting one of the steps that will lead them to Osage wealth – William inflicts a surprising punishment on Ernest. The latter imposes on his nephew a position which will allow him to hit him on the buttocks with a wooden paddle.

Perhaps this spanking session was a way for Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese to atone for their frustration with DiCaprio’s “endless” improvisations?

Rodrigo Prieto was somewhat surprised to learn that a spanking scene would be included in the film, since it does not appear in the novel by David Grann.

Rodrigo explains that the scene illustrates the determined character of Leonardo DiCaprio.

“Leo wants to play the game. He would do anything.”

For his role in the Revenant, for which he was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2015, Leonardo dealt with extreme temperatures. Additionally, he insisted on eating a raw bison liver during one scene.

We’ll see if the spanking scene earns Leonardo DiCaprio his second Oscar.
