Star: “To be a great artist, you have to be selfish”
Meeting with Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls and Mme Maisel, who returns today to Prime Video with a new dramatic series on ballet, dance, art.
Are we obliged to be narcissistic or self-centered to be a great artist? The question crosses the series Star – Just released on Prime Video – as obvious.
The creator of Gilmore Girls and The fabulous Madame Maisel Returns with a big fresco on the world of ballet and contemporary dance, between New York and Paris. Two world renowned companies, one American, the other French, try a daring bet: to save their historical institutions, they exchange their most talented recruits.
Charlotte Gainsbourg embodies the director of the ballet, Lou de laâge plays the French dancer, and Taïs Vinolo his sister from the United States. Star Thus explores the fierce atmosphere of the middle, the low blows, the rivalries, to better question what it means to do with art.
“You know … Art is a very fragile thing, and at the moment, in the United States, all the arts are attacked. It looks like the ballet can stop at any time”, entrust Amy Sherman-Palladino in Premiere. “The rooms close, there is no more money, the government does not want to give it and sees art as a threat… “
For her, one thing is certain: “Without art, everything dies.” SO, Star Also becomes a reminder, almost a manifesto: “The most beautiful things can disappear if we don’t take care of it. The dancers can injure themselves at any time, and pouf! Their careers are over. We say that the ballet is the only art form where we are sure not to earn money. You finish at 30 years, in any case. It’s very volatile.”
A more shady vision than that of his previous creations: “It’s true that MRS. Maisel had a much more inspiring vocation. And Gilmore Girls showed two women who built their own world“Admit the designer.”Starshe, broadcasts a certain ‘boredom’ (in French in the text), because she does not seek to build, but to preserve what is already there. “
Art, basically, is an obsession in Amy Sherman-Palladinowhich also raises the question of what a real artist is. “”I believe that to be the best, you must not compromise. And you can hurt your entourage. Is this the only way to do? I don’t know, but it makes me think. Greatness has a price “she analyzes before continuing her vision of things:
“To be tall, you must be selfish ! This is why the great artists are certainly not the best parents. Nor best friends. Because they always think of how to reach purity. Sometimes it means missing the show of your child or a birthday. Or you go, but it impacts your art. “
The author admits that vision is simplistic, but this is the question posed by Star through her young heroine played by Lou de laâge : “It’s not that Cheyenne wants to hurt people. It is not in its DNA. It’s just that she doesn’t know how to do otherwise. She is too much in the moment… “
