Stranger Things, season 5: the end of part 1 explained

What happened with Will? What does Vecna want? Some answers to better understand the Upside Down before the sequel.

Part 1 of the final season of Stranger Things ends with a huge shock. And that deserved a little explanation.

Spoiler alert!

Vecna took her first steps in Hawkins. He came out of the Upside Down to taunt Will. Except that the young boy understood that he could, therefore, tap into Henry’s powers!

Jamie Campbell Bower, aka Vecna, confirms in an interview with ScreenRant that “Will is one of the 12 children that Vecna needs to perfect her hive mind.” But reveals: “In the sequel, Will will become an even bigger problem than he already was, because his powers are drawn from the connection between them.”

Will therefore unlocks his telekinetic powers* And Noah Schnapp is delighted, he who only learned about it by reading the script for episode 4 (“Sorcerer”). “I have powers!” he yelled.

But what powers? How does it work? The Duffers provide after-sales service in Variety.

If Will kills the Demogorgons with the little drop of blood at the tip of his nose, typical of Eleven, Will has not become a new Eleven! The two creators of Stranger Things detail:

“It’s a different power: Will is able to channel Vecna’s powers.” In other words, these powers are not in him: he borrows them from Vecna. “He connects to the hive mind and can manipulate anything that is part of it. He cannot open a door with his mind, it is not in the hive mind.”

How did Will get this connection? Again, simple answer:

“Because he was plugged into the hive mind. But then, if he’s not close to the hive mind, he can’t access it. It’s all based on proximity.”

In short: if he had never been captured and taken to the Upside Down, this would never have happened. Nothing to do with Eleven, who gets her powers from her past in the laboratory.

One question remains: why doesn’t Vecna kill Will during the final fight? Or why doesn’t he take her to the Upside Down with him?

“Because he completely underestimates him” answer the Duffers. For Vecna, Will is weak. Invisible. Unimportant. A monumental error of judgment. “You’ll see as he moves forward, but he completely underestimates Will. He sees him as so many others have in his life: as someone weak, insignificant, incapable of accomplishing anything great. He completely underestimates him in this moment. Will it happen again? You’ll have to watch Volume 2.”

It remains to be seen what Vecna ultimately wants. Why did you kidnap these children? What is his ultimate motivation?

“Nothing good,” smile the Duffers who assure that the answer to this big question has not yet really been given and that it will come.

Vecna repeats that children are the key to “remaking the world”.

“But what does that mean?” asks Matt Duffer. Nothing very reassuring a priori.

We will surely have answers in part 2 of season 5 of Stranger Things, which will be released on Netflix on December 26.
