The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2: it’s official, the sequel is coming to Netflix

The animated film nominated for the Oscars will be entitled to a second part. But what will it be about?

Three years after winning over the public and landing an Oscar nomination, The Mitchells against the machines will be entitled to a sequel.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation team up again to develop The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2production of which will begin in early 2026.

The film will be directed by Guillermo Martinez (head of story of the first opus) and JP Sans (co-director of The Bad Guys 2), marking Martinez’s directorial debut. The screenplay is entrusted to sisters Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, already behind the animated film The Great North.

On the production side, we find Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. And Mike Rianda, co-writer and director of the first film, will return as executive producer.

As with the first film, the sequel will be distributed by Netflix, under a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Animation. But this time, the two studios promise closer creative collaboration. As a reminder, The Mitchells against the machines was initially planned for a cinema release by Sony in 2020 under the title Connectedbefore the pandemic pushed the studio to resell the film to Netflix for more than $100 million. Result: a critical and public triumph, eight Annie Awards to boot, and an Oscar nomination in the Best Animated Film category.

The first film followed the Mitchell family, who set off on a road trip to take their daughter Katie (voice of Abbi Jacobson) to film school in California. Their journey changes when a rebellious artificial intelligence, PAL (voice of Olivia Colman), triggers a global machine revolt. Between the handyman and technophobe father (Danny McBride), the mother overflowing with optimism (Maya Rudolph) and the little brother passionate about dinosaurs (Mike Rianda), the Mitchells improvised as the last bastions of humanity. We don’t yet know what the sequel will be about…
