Why Kit Harrington is (again) angry with Game of Thrones fans

The English actor got “sincerely angry” when he saw the reaction of Westeros enthusiasts to the last episode of the HBO series…

The finale of Stranger Things is heckled by fans, like that of Game of Thrones in 2019.

And seven years later, Kit Harington is still having trouble swallowing the pill. The English actor returned this week to the petition of fans unhappy with this much-maligned finale. A gesture which “sincerely made him angry”.

The interpreter of Jon Snow spoke bluntly about the famous petition signed by nearly two million people, asking HBO to reshoot the series finale “with competent writers”. An initiative which, unsurprisingly, did not please him at all (we imagine that it must be annoying…)!

“It really made me angry,” Kit Harington said in an interview with the New York Times this week. “I was like, ‘How dare you?’ Sorry, but that’s really how I felt!”

The actor recalls how much the screenwriters David Benioff and DB Weiss invested in this final stretch, especially since the series had long surpassed the novels A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, still unfinished to this day. It is precisely for this reason that the petition shocked him deeply.

“I think it’s a level of idiocy that can only exist thanks to social media,” he says bluntly.

Especially since the broadcast of the final season of Game of Thrones coincided with a particularly difficult period for Harington, then in rehab for alcohol addiction and mental exhaustion. When he returned, he said he was stunned by the violence of the public’s rejection.

“I went into treatment and everyone loved Game of Thrones; I came out and everyone hated the series…” he already declared in April 2024. “If there is a failure in the end of Thrones, it is undoubtedly that we were all completely exhausted. We could not continue any longer. I understand that some found it rushed, and I can even agree with them. But I don’t see what other option there was. When I watch photos of me in the last season, I see someone exhausted, drained. I didn’t have one more season in me.”

Finally, Kit Harington has confirmed that the spinoff series project centered on Jon Snow has been completely frozen. Information that he had already shared with Entertainment Weekly.

“It won’t happen — at least not soon,” he said recently. “We explored several ideas, but nothing really excited us. And we don’t want to do something that isn’t worth it. For now, the project is simply shelved.”
