You: The end of the series almost was very different

“We didn’t all agree …” says one of the producers of the series today.

While the last season of You Squatte again the top 10 of Netflix, fans savor their last moments with the dark Joe Goldberg, alias the “serial lover” embodied by Penn Badgley. But the end putting online in recent weeks on the platform has almost been very different.

Attention spoilers!

At the end of season 5, Joe was finally defeated, arrested and imprisoned. He ends up breaking the fourth wall, looks straight into the eyes of the public and all those who idolize monsters like him saying: “Maybe the problem is not me. It’s you.”

A cynical conclusion that almost was less subtle: according to Michael Foleyco-showrunner of the series, kill Joe at the end “was really an option“.

In an interview for Tvlinehe says that the end of Joe has been debated among the authors and producers of You ::

“We debated it a lot in the writing room. We all agreed on the idea that he had to pay, face who he really is, and finally leave a voice to the victims and their loved ones. But on the details – die, be arrested, go to court – there, we were not all agree …”

Finally, the creators decided: to kill Joe, it was too simple. Too comfortable.

“We found that death was a rescue exit too easy for him,” explains Foley. “We preferred the idea that he was locked up in his own cage. No more human contact, more power, more escape. A guy obsessed with control, private forever of any grip: this is a real punishment. And frankly, visually, it has more mouth than tomb.”
