Disappointment for French cinema at the 83rd Golden Globes ceremony
Apart from the surprise success of Timothée Chalamet, France leaves empty-handed from this 2026 edition. Not a very good sign, in view of the Oscars…
You can’t win every time…
After a successful 2025 edition for French cinema thanks to Emilia Perezthe 83rd Golden Globes ceremony was less tricolor…
If we except the victory of Timothée Chalamet – Franco-American star of Marty Supreme – all the representatives of France left Los Angeles empty-handed last night. A zero point for the national industry, in a list which nevertheless gives pride of place to international productions.
France thus had 7 potential candidates for a trophy after the nominations. A Simple Accident appeared in several major categories, while the very fine Amélie and the Metaphysics of Tubes and above all Arco (crowned at the last Annecy festival) had a small chance against the big one Kpop Demon Hunters from Netflix in the Best Animated Film category. But nothing happened. Even the composer Alexandre Desplat – nominated in the category of best original music for Frankenstein – already honored twice by the Globesfailed to win any awards (attributed to the magnificent soundtrack of Sinners).
The biggest disappointment certainly comes from the Best Foreign Film category. It is The Secret Agent (Brazil) who beat A Simple Accidentthe Palme d’Or by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, produced by France. A bad omen for the next Oscars. Brazilian cinema can even boast of having also won the prize for Best Actor in a Drama for Wagner Moura. It will arrive in force on March 15 during the 97th statuette ceremony. We will remember that last year, I’m still here of the Brazilian Walter Salles had already beaten Emilia Pérez for the Oscar for best international film… This France-Brazil match could well turn out, once again, to the advantage of the Auriverdes.
