When Margaret Atwood makes a cameo in the finale of The Testaments
The author had already made an appearance in the previous series, The Handmaid’s Tale.
The most attentive fans may have spotted her: Margaret Atwood appears discreetly in the finale of season 1 of The Testaments, put online this week on Disney + in France.
The cult author of The Handmaid’s Tale and its sequel The Testaments – which both serve as the basis for the series – makes a cameo in episode 10.
Spoiler alert!
She plays a prison guard who allows Aunt Lydia to visit Becka, arrested after killing her father. Before letting her in, her character simply says, “Don’t agitate her.”
A small role, but an inevitably symbolic moment for the teams in the series.
Mattea Conforti, who plays Becka, says she was particularly impressed to film opposite the woman who created the entire Gilead universe.
“It was an incredible experience working with the woman who gave us the space to create this series,” the actress tells TVLine. “I was shooting some very intense scenes in prison that day and I really wanted to communicate to Margaret what Becka was going through emotionally at that particular moment, and what she was imagining for the character.”
And obviously, Margaret Atwood was particularly convincing in her role: “In her character, she was very strong… and frankly scary! But between takes, she was adorable.”
This is not the first appearance of the writer in this television universe.
She already made a cameo in the very first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, where she played a Red Center Aunt who slapped the character played by Elisabeth Moss.
