Obsession 2: is a sequel already in the works?

The director of Obsession moves to Universal for his next film

After the phenomenon, the biggest success in the history of Focus Features, the young filmmaker moved up a gear within a bigger studio.

The director ofObsession changes dimension.

After having signed the biggest success in the history of Focus Features with his horror thriller, Curry Barker is already preparing his next film… and this time joining the ranks of Universal.

The American filmmaker will write, direct and produce a third original horror feature film for Universal Film Group, in collaboration with Blumhouse Atomic Monster (which was already behind Obsession). Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but the project is being touted as an original idea dreamed up by Barker himself.

Obviously, a bigger studio means a bigger budget (Obsession was shot for only 1 million dollars), so greater pressure and more interference that the young filmmaker will have to master in order not to lose his touch.

The director did not hide his enthusiasm at the idea of continuing the adventure with his new partners.

It’s a film I’ve wanted to make for a long time and I’m delighted to be reunited with Blumhouse Atomic Monster as well as Universal Film Group. They have built a home for the bold, original stories that every filmmaker dreams of. I couldn’t imagine better collaborators for this project.

Strong support for someone who has become, in just a few months, one of the new sensations in genre cinema.

Donna Langley, Chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment, salutes “an exceptional ability to capture the spirit of the times” and believes that Barker is in the process of “redefine what is possible” in contemporary horror cinema. Same story from the heads of Blumhouse Atomic Monster, Jason Blum and James Wan, who recall the phenomenon caused by Obsession :

With Obsession, Curry achieved what only a handful of filmmakers per generation manage to accomplish: create something totally original that reaches a huge audience.

Before this new project, Barker still has to finalize Anything But Ghostshis second feature film, currently in post-production for Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Focus Features. The film does not yet have a release date.

As for Obsessionthe film continues to panic the counters: it should cross the threshold of 300 million dollars in worldwide receipts this weekend and pass the million admissions in France.
