Brad Bird refuses to make Ratatouille 2: “We’ve already told this story”
Twenty years after Pixar’s masterpiece, rumors surrounding a Ratatouille sequel are multiplying. But its director obviously has no desire to put Remy back in the kitchen.
While Pixar is banking more and more on its franchises and sequels, the little rat cook is putting up resistance.
Still no Ratatouille 2 in sight in the studio schedule. And that’s normal: the director of the 2007 film doesn’t want to do it. Asked by ColliderBrad Bird was however very clear: for him, the story of Ratatouille is finished.
“At Pixar, they sometimes throw little poles at me to see how I react. They make a joke, but a half-serious joke, like: ‘What if we made another one?’ And I answer: No, we told this story.”
The director of Ratatouille and Incredibles believes that some films simply don’t need a sequel:
“As soon as a work hits the public, people automatically ask: ‘Why not a sequel?’ People even often talk to me about making a sequel to The Iron Giant too… Which makes me laugh because the film didn’t do well at all when it was released. It has been reevaluated over time… But what would we say next? That he’s still wandering around somewhere undiscovered? For me these stories are over.”
Brad Bird is not opposed to sequels, however. He has already returned for The Incredibles 2released fourteen years after the first film, and a third part is currently in preparation, this time under the direction of Peter Sohn.
As for Remy, his future therefore remains very uncertain. Patton Oswalt, the original voice of the gourmet rat, has already said that he would be up for a Ratatouille 2provided that he finds “the same energy as the greatest sequels in the history of cinema”.
