Disney+ cancels Wonder Man and will not make season 2 already ordered
“That’s life,” Yahya Abdul-Mateen II reacts soberly.
A twist at Marvel.
While Disney+ officially renewed Wonder Man for a season 2 in March, the platform is finally backtracking.
According to Variety, the series is simply canceled.
According to the American media, the writing of this second season was never launched and the writers have already been released to join other projects. A surprise decision, as the series had been so appreciated, presented as the best Marvel creation for Disney Plus in a long time.
Created by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) and Andrew Guest, Wonder Man followed Simon Williams, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, alongside Ben Kingsley, returning as Trevor Slattery. Disney has never revealed the ratings for the series, which has only appeared once in Nielsen’s weekly Top 10.
A few hours after the announcement, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (who received an Emmy nomination for his role) reacted philosophically on social networks:
“The news has just broken: Wonder Man will not return for a season 2… That’s life, right? Everything will work out in the end.”
The actor especially wanted to thank the spectators, refusing to talk about failure:
“Thank you to everyone who watched the show. It worked, and that’s what matters most to me. I’ve seen it in the reactions on YouTube, in the messages from people who told me the show made them not want to give up, and in the genuine affection I get when I see you. I’m thinking of you today. I’m glad I was a part of something so cool.”
An unexpected departure for a series which nevertheless seemed to have found its place. A source close to the matter specifies, however, that if the series ends, its characters could reappear in other Marvel Cinematic Universe productions.
