Already a million for Toy Story 5, Obsession also reaches the milestone in France

The new Pixar takes the lead at the French box office, while the small independent horror film continues to be a hit, and Backrooms gets off to an impressive start.

Toys are always popular.

Unsurprisingly, Toy Story 5 moves to the top of the French box office this week. The new part of Pixar’s animated saga has already attracted more than 1 million spectators for its first week of operation, on 651 screens. An impressive start and more than enough to take control of the national ranking, but which remains significantly lower than those of Toy Story 4launched with more than 1.5 million admissions in 2019, and Toy Story 3which reached 1.2 million spectators in its first week in 2010.

For now, Toy Story 5 evolves more in the waters of Toy Story 2 (930,000 tickets in the first week in 1999), which ultimately ended its career with around 4.5 million admissions in France.

The other sensation of the weekend is called Backrooms. The phenomenon by Kane Parsons has successfully arrived in French cinemas, taking second place at the box office with almost 500,000 admissions since its release. Distributed on only 326 prints, the film posted an impressive average of 1,236 admissions per screen, higher than that of Toy Story 5 ! A departure which is even more powerful than that ofObsessionwhich only attracted 170,000 spectators at the same stage of its operation a little less than two months ago.

And precisely, Obsession continues his incredible journey. The horror film has just crossed the symbolic milestone of one million admissions, with now 1.05 million tickets sold, despite a drop in attendance limited to 27% this weekend. A performance that brings him closer to the great recent successes of genre cinema, such as Fainted by Zach Cregger, who ended his French career with around 1.1 million spectators last year.

Faced with all this competition, Disclosure Day by Steven Spielberg is already showing the blow. In the second week, the science fiction film fell by almost 45% and to fourth position, and added only 260,000 new entries. Its total nevertheless reached almost 700,000 spectators, proof that UFO enthusiasts still exist.

While waiting for the arrival of I write your name this Friday, The Battle of Gaulle: The Iron Age does better than resist. The first part of Antonin Baudry’s historic fresco hangs on the podium. The film directed by Simon Abkarian attracted more than 270,000 new spectators, an increase in attendance for its third week, thanks to a wider distribution. More screens lead to more tickets sold and the General now has almost 900,000 entries. The million mark should be crossed in the coming days.

On the other hand, the situation is seriously complicated for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. The galactic blockbuster is almost at a standstill with only 60,000 new entries in recent days. The film has just surpassed one million spectators and will count on the Cinema Festival to boost its final score. But avoid the title of smallest success in the history of the saga Star Wars in France, currently owned by Solo with 1.4 million admissions in 2018, now seems very compromised.
