Cannes Classics will celebrate its 20th anniversary with Napoléon, Faye Dunaway, Paris, Texas, Marco Bellocchio…

Big program for this 2024 edition! For example, restored copies of The Sugarland Express by Steven Spielberg or Shanghai Blues by Tsui Hark will be shown to the public.

A few days after announcing that the first part of Napoleon by Abel Gance would open the 20th edition of Cannes Classics, the organizers of the 77th festival specify what the rest of the selection will be. To celebrate this anniversary, the team pulled out all the stops, offering the public numerous reissues of cult films, including works that received a Palme d'Or, such as Paris, Texas (1984), by Wim Wenders, or Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964).

The 30th anniversary of the first will be celebrated in the presence of the filmmaker, and the 60th anniversary of Jacques Demy's musical will be presented by his children, Rosalie Varda-Demy and Mathieu Demy. This event screening will be accompanied by that of a documentary dedicated to the French director, entitled Jacques Demy, pink and black.

Another unmissable anniversary in 2024: the 70th anniversary of Seven samurai, by Akira Kurosawa. Shion Komatsu, from Toho Studios, will be traveling to unveil his 4K restoration.

Recognized filmmakers such as Frederick Wiseman, Marco Bellocchio and Raymond Depardon will also be expected at Cannes Classics, to show restored versions of Law and Order (1969), Rape on the front page (1972) and The Click Years (1984) for the first three, and a documentary series by Yannick Kergoat written by Edwy Plenel for the last, the first episode of which is entitled The Century of Costa-Gavras: The truth is revolutionary – L’Aveu.

Another important anniversary, the 100th anniversary of the Columbia studio will be celebrated with a screening of the classic Gildaby Charles Vidor. Faye Dunaway will be in the spotlight via the portrait of Faye, directed by Laurent Bouzereau, as will Elizabeth Taylor, Jacques Rozier and François Truffaut, who will also have their new documentary. Ron Howard will travel to unveil his film dedicated to Jim Hensonthe creator of Muppet Showto be seen soon on Disney+.

Finally, the final film by Jean-Luc Godard, Scenarioswill be offered to the public: an 18-minute project designed the day before his death and accompanied by a 34-minute making-of, “mixing still images and moving images, halfway between reading and vision, he presented the project of Scenarios“, specifies the press release.
