Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will tell the story of these brothers sentenced in 1996 for the murder of their parents. In addition to the series, Netflix offers itself as a bonus exclusive access to Lyle and Erik Menendez to shoot a documentary feature film around their story.
José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez were shot and killed in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. Erik and Lyle weren’t the first suspects, but police began investigating their involvement in the months that followed. Erik eventually confessed to his psychologist, Jerome Oziel, who told his mistress, Judalon Smyth, turned into a key witness in the trial. On the stand, the brothers said they committed the murders in self-defense after a lifetime of abuse from their parents, particularly their father. They were tried separately, then together and found guilty. Erik and Lyle were sentenced to life without parole and are still incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Center in Southern California.
