Denis Villeneuve validates the memes on Stilgar

The director of the Dune saga finds Javier Bardem as Stilgar very funny and is delighted with the jokes around his characters on social networks.

He is one of the leading figures of Dune: Part 2. Interpreted by Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), Stilgar is the leader of the Sietch Tabr, one of the Fremen tribes – the people of Arrakis, Dune, the sand planet. Although he represents an authority figure for his community on Earth, the blue planet, he is the source of many jokes.

Who, surfing social networks, has not already come across this kind of meme?

The Internet is overflowing with jokes like this. They did not go unnoticed and reached the ears of Denis Villeneuve.

Interviewed by the New York Timesthe director of the saga Dune admitted not to have been surprised by the laughter heard in the cinemas while Stilgar on screen exclaims at the slightest gesture of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet): Lisan Al-Gaib! The one who was initially constructed as a tragic figure has become comical.

“For me, he is the most tragic character. The idea was to bring humor to Stilgar to make him more sympathetic, to feel humanity in this character. He is not an austere figure, he has a big heart But his beliefs, his faith, his reactions can make you laugh – and that's something I love about making a science fiction film. Because I can evoke. all this, without offending anyone, because it is a religion which does not exist I formulated the prayers myself, so I know it is false I find Stilgar very funny and when people. laugh, I'm happy because that was my intention.”

In the first part of Dune, Stilgar welcomes Paul and his mother, Lady Jessica, into the clan. The latter is convinced body and soul that Paul is the Lisan Al-Gaib – the Fremen term for the Messiah, the one who possesses supernatural powers, will save his people, and fulfill the prophecy.

His blind devotion is mocked on social networks. Any internet user performing wonders is the new messiah. Denis Villeneuve continues: “Every time he (Stilgar) meets a man who comes from elsewhere and with a lot of charisma, he hopes it’s him.”

While Dune: Part 2 explores political conflicts and the religion established for hundreds of years by the Bene Gesserit, the director discusses in the interview Lady Jessica's tattoos, Paul's belief in prophecy, the power of women in Dune and the role played by Chani as one who opposes the beliefs of her father, Stilgar, and sees in Paul a much darker figure than that of a liberator…

Currently, this second opus is the biggest success of this year with 600 million dollars in revenue (and just 4 million admissions in France). If you feel like replaying the opening scene, Fandango Media shared it on Twitter.
