John Boyega criticizes the ordinary racism of Star Wars fans
“Star Wars has always had this aura of a white and elitist space” regrets the actor of the Réveil de la Force.
John Boyega has never hidden his criticisms of the universe of Star Wars. The actor speaks again recently to denounce the way in which the franchise deals with black characters, as well as the reactions of fans to their presence in this universe.
During an appearance in the original Apple TV+ documentary Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood (via EW), John Boyega said that Star Wars had become “so white“That it was now perceived as an event the fact that a black actor joins the franchise.
“”Star Wars has always had this aura of a white and elitist space. It is such a white franchise that the simple existence of a black character in it is perceived as a Marquan factT, “said Boyega.”We can see that this is a subject of discussion when some fans try to justify by saying: ‘But we had Lando Calrissian and Samuel L. Jackson!’ It’s like telling me how many chocolate chips in a cookie dough are. They are just scattered at random!“”
The actor also criticized part of the fans of Star Warsbelieving that they accept the presence of black actors as long as they play the role of ” best friend But they have a problem as soon as these characters take a prominent place.
“They agree so that we play the role of the best friend, but as soon as we touch their heroes, as soon as we are headlining, as soon as we open the way, it is immediately too much for them! They cry out for complacency”.
A form of ordinary racism that John Boyega had already denounced in the past, not hesitating to tackle Disney (in GQ in 2020) by reproaching the studio for having “Introduced a black character (Finn), to promote it as being crucial in the franchise, then relegating it to the background. It’s not good. I say it clearly. “
