Lady Gaga will sing in Joker: Folie à Deux, but in a completely new way

“I worked a lot on my singing so that it came from Lee, and not from me, from the singer that I am.”

At Arkham Asylum, there are more than one lunatic, including some very famous ones: Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix), And “Lee”aka Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) are part of it. The loving duo indulges in a criminal escapade in Joker: Madness for Twothe sequel to the adventures of Gotham’s most smiling villain. While audiences and critics were unanimous about the actor’s inhabited performance, everything points in the same direction for his co-star. Having never done anything like this, Gaga as Harley Quin would be both familiar and unique – so much so that she would have bluffed the casting director. Stefani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga should dazzle us… but also dazzle our ears.

Lady Gaga wowed the casting director of Joker: Folie à Deux

Billed as a musical, Todd Philipps’ next feature film will also be dark but will include a few notes of color with songs and even dance. We can also hear the actress and singer singing lightly at the end of the trailer. And although this is not the first time we hear her singing in a movie – she was the star of the remake A Star is Born by Bradley Cooper – this time, his musical prowess will be unprecedented.

Interviewed by the British magazine Empire Who dedicates her next cover to the film, Lady Gaga explained that her vocal performance will be new and unexpected:

“People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? It’s about me, as the artist that I am. But that’s not what this movie is about, I’m playing a character. I worked a lot on my singing so that it came from Lee, and not from me, as the singer that I am.”

If the actress put her all into her character, there is one detail that she had to put aside: her talents as a vocalist. In A Star is Bornher character, Ally Campana was a very promising young singer, but in Joker: Madness for TwoHarley Quinn doesn’t have the same relationship with the microphone. So out goes the polished performance of “Paparazzi”and watch out for false notes:

“Even my breathing was different when I sang as Lee. When I breathe to sing on stage, I’m careful to do it in the right pitch, it’s sustained at the right pace and for a long time. Lee would never know how to do all that. So it’s like I’m taking all my technique out of the whole thing, my artistic vision, and instead, becoming Lee completely.”

With a promising performance, will Lady Gaga follow the royal path of Joaquin Phoenix who won the Oscar for best actor for his role? Could it be when she sings like “Lee” and not like “Lady Gaga” that she could finally win the statuette for which she was competing in 2019 for A Star is Born ?

Joker: Madness for Two will be released in France on October 2.
