Love Lies Bleeding finally has a French release date

Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian in an ultra-violent queer romance, it's coming soon!

If Thelma and Louise hid a police officer in the trunk of their car, they have a corpse in the back of their pick-up. After a notable first presentation at the Sundance Film Festival last January, Love Lies Bleedingthis neo-noir thriller starring Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Spencer, Future Crimes) and Katy O’Brian (The Mandalorian, Ant-Man) in a romance queer ultra-violent will finally be able to afford an outing in France.

The distributor Metropolitan announced on April 17 the release of the film for June 12, 2024 – four months after its release in the United States.

On social networks, the public at the same time discovers the French poster, ultra colorful with a title strewn like neon and our two protagonists kissing in a car facing a ravine, the chaos behind in the rearview mirror. Spoiler alert: doesn't that remind you of Ridley Scott's film with Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon?

The story of Love Lies Bleeding takes place in 1989 in a town in the middle of the desert. Deep America. Kristen Stewart plays Lou, a gym owner. She meets Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder with impressive muscles. It is in Vegas that she wishes to pursue her dream. But quickly, the two women plunge into a bloody trafficking led by Lou's father played by Ed Harris (Westworld, Abyss, Stalingrad) with the questionable haircut – as the trailer released last year suggests. A nod perhaps to Gary Oldman's deranged character in True Romance by Tony Scott released in 1993.

Redefining the codes of a genre dominated by predominantly hetero-normative couples, Love Lies Bleeding exudes a new feminine energy. Paced by “Smalltown Boy” by the British group Bronski Beat – whose lyrics evoke a young gay man forced to leave his town – the trailer intersperses scenes of violence, crimes, and weapons… lots of weapons.

Presented in European preview on April 13 in Belgium as part of the BIFFF (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival) which takes place from April 9 to 21, the film caused a lot of noise following a session disrupted by comments and remarks misogynists and lesbophobes.

According to the Belgian media The eveningmen present in the room when the film was broadcast would have “having fun shouting dirty comments for every second (about) lesbians” And “yelling at dykes to shut up when they complain”. The media reports the comments of a spectator published on X (formerly Twitter). Following inappropriate remarks from certain men, a group of women reportedly asked for silence. The initially verbal altercations ended with physical threats and blows.

Kristen Stewart pauses her acting career to direct her first film

The BIFFF was quick to react. The next day, the organizer posted a press release on social networks in which he condemned the discriminatory remarks and “violence to express disagreement.” He adds :

As we have repeatedly said, 'humor always, but respect above all'. For this reason, we sincerely apologize to the public.

Apologies which were moderately accepted by Internet users who expressed their disagreement in response to this post.

In a new press release issued a few days later, the organizers claimed that the police did not intervene “respecting their (protesters) freedom of expression.” He adds :

“For 42 years, we have worked for the inclusiveness and diversity of our selection, our events, our guests, our public, as well as our juries. The festival, like society, must evolve.”

It will surely take more to discourage spectators from seeing Love Lies BleedingRose Glass' second feature film, after Saint Maud produced in 2019 for which she was nominated for a BAFTA.

Especially since for the American media present during the first screening of the film in January, Kristen Stewart's performance is more than convincing, it is “purely magnetic. »
