Our summer 2025 box office report

What blockbuster has really managed to make a box? Which one has disappointed or planted downright? And what is the surprise of the season? While the holidays end, we analyze the last months of the box office.

Alone on the sand, eyes in the water, the cinema was not really at the party in this summer 2025, whether in France or in the rest of the world.

While the long holidays are completed, a return on the successes and failures of the season. And the observation is simple: the 15 largest successes of summer 2025 currently combine $ 4.3 billion at the world box office, a drop of about 30 % compared to the 15 largest success in the summer of 2024 (6.4 billion). A figure that illustrates a trend to say the least disappointing. So who knew how to finish obscure rooms? And who has not been able to attract spectators to flip flops? We take stock.

The big winner

850 million dollars on the clock for dinos. The film will not finish billionaire as the previous three opus in the franchise, but proves that the T-Rex still has a sacred power of attraction. Moreover, the film should exceed 3 million admissions in France and become the second biggest success of the year 2025 behind Lilo & Stitch Live action (5 million since May).

Unexpected box

$ 626 million in global revenue for Krokmou, a score far superior to the original animated film of 2010 (500 million). It is an almost unexpected hit for DreamWorks, with this live-action version that nobody really expected. It also has more than 2.5 million admissions in France.

The nice expected success

$ 600 million is downright the biggest success in Brad Pitt’s career! So obviously, the F1s do not go as fast as the F15. The previous film that takes the director, Top Gun: Maverickhad done almost three times more (1.5 billion). But it is still a total success for Apple. In France, the film even exceeds 3 million admissions.

Good but not super

$ 600 million also – including 350 million in the United States alone – for the superhero film of the summer. A solid score, but in France the film attracted only 1.5 million spectators, proof that Superman is above all a hero of Uncle Sam. No jackpot immediately for Warner, but the studio has at least one correct base to build the new DC Universe. This is his victory.

The disappointment

$ 500 million worldwide. It’s very good for Marvel. The mirror effect with the competition is tough. This time, the MCU is behind. The Fantastic Four have only attracted 1.5 million spectators in France and the studio can no longer. The summer of the change of reign in masked avengers?

The beautiful surprise

$ 200 million in revenue (half of which in the United States) and around 1 million admissions in France. It is a very good result for an original terror film, without license, without deductible, and only carried by Julia Garner at the head of the poster. Boosted by an excellent word of mouth, Passed out even became in August the small cinema phenomenon of summer.

The animation winner

Very low year for the lively feature films for the whole family, usually over-performing during school holidays.

A nice little success that saves the honor of the genre and should finish with the biggest score of animation this summer. For the moment, these Bad Guys has $ 121 million in global revenue. But boosted by super critical, the continuation will end his career above 200 million and 2 million admissions in France.

Pixar was trying an original this summer. It is a bitter failure for the studio, which caps at $ 150 million (and only 1.2 million admissions in France), very far from the summits of the studio, as Vice-versa 2 last year (1.7 billion and 8 million admissions).

Peyo’s little blue guys have made a nice course in France (1.5 million admissions) but remain very limited in the rest world, barely above $ 100 million.

Chess

Sony bet big on the recovery of the zombical saga of the 2000s. Despite good criticism, welcoming the director’s original approach, the public did not follow: $ 150 million worldwide and only 532,000 admissions in France. While the rest, The Bone Templeis already turned and will be released in January 2026, it is the production of the end of the saga that is called into question by this low jackpot.

$ 133.8 million for Ana de Armas, who failed to convince lovers of Keanu Reeves. The spin-off is far from its ambitions and even makes less than 400,000 French admissions, the worse scoring of the saga with us.

$ 110 million for the Karate film. It’s not much for a project that surfed on the immense popular success of the series COBRA KAI. It is even three times less than the 2010 remake (carried by Jaden Smith), which displayed 360 million at the end of the course. Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio also take his feet in Tatami in France with barely 200,000 admissions.

Big flops

$ 63 million (including 31 million in the USA), the reboot has completely failed to bring horror fans back to theaters, despite the presence of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr back in the casting. In France: only 300,000 admissions. What about French cinema?

No great success to report this year in theaters this year. Not Monte-Cristo or Extra little To boost attendance. Few, the expected hexagonal productions have rather disappointed.

500,000 admissions, barely. The director of Three musketeers failed to transform his intense action thriller into popular success.

550,000 admissions (for now) it is not a big success either. A respectable score but much lower than expectations for the French director. He should succeed as well asAnnawhich had totaled 750,000 spectators in 2019. But the last real hit of Besson always dates from Valerianin 2017 (4 million admissions).

370,000 admissions is a good score for the director, who managed to be the tricolor number 1 in July.
