Stranger Things: why is Nikki not returning in season 3?
The new punk heroine of Chronicles of 1985 finds her place in the Hawkins gang… and yet, we will never hear from her again.
Nikki and Will became friends. And even very close, at the end of the new series Stranger Things: Chronicles of 1985.
And yet, Nikki Baxter (voiced by Odessa A’zion) is never mentioned in the rest of the saga. Given the preponderant place taken by the tender punk in the Hawkins gang, in the heart of this winter of 1985, how can we explain that she is completely absent six months later, when season 3 of Stranger Things takes place?
The cartoon’s creator, Eric Robles, clarified the situation and his answer is quite simple: Contrary to fan speculation, Nikki simply didn’t disappear… she grew apart, like many friendships back in the day.
“One thing that’s hard for young people today to understand is that in the ’80s it wasn’t like it is now. You could make a friend on vacation, have amazing adventures…and then never really stay in touch again,” Robles tells SFX Magazine. In the pre-Internet era, no social networks, no constant messages: connections were made… and undone.
“If you had a phone number, maybe you could stay in touch. But most of the time, people would come in and out of your life. Like that. They might be your best friend for two weeks or three months, then disappear. That’s exactly it, Nikki!”
An explanation which further anchors the Hawkins universe in a very 80’s reality and which suggests that Nikki… will not reappear again!
Stranger Things: Chronicles of 1985 is currently available on Netflix.
