We tested Quidditch in the new Harry Potter video game

Fans of the saga are spoiled with this total sports game, which brings together a maximum of characters in the universe of JK Rowling. A little pleasure from the Wizarding World, even if the gameplay remains limited.

After having walked the length and breadth of Hogwarts with Hogwarts Legacylast winter, Warner Bros. Games offered us a new video game dive into the Wizarding World. No RPG this time, but a pure sports game, which lets us discover the joys of Quidditch like never before!

Precisely, the players had complained last year, when they discovered that the famous favorite hobby of magicians of Harry Potter was not included in the activities of Hogwarts Legacy. The studio therefore makes up for it here with Quidditch Champions, a fun little game, clearly designed primarily for fans of the saga. All the heroes are brought together in this title, which gives pride of place to the universe of JK Rowling. Whether in the garden around the Burrow (the Weasleys’ house) in the Hogwarts stadium or that of Beauxbatons, the title will meticulously scratch out all the possible winks, until it brings you back to the intro scene of the fourth part (The Goblet of Fire) to give you an inside look at the Quidditch World Cup.

Of course, it is possible to accessorize to the maximum, to create a character in your image, to customize the outfits, the brooms (which have characteristics like the vehicles of Mario Kart) and to develop his team’s roster, gradually bringing in new faces to integrate, such as Cédric Diggory or Cho Chang, as he wins.

A real little fan’s thrill, which will then come up against a major problem: Quidditch is a strange sport! With its chasers, beaters, and catchers, each position has a specific characteristic, which is not always easy to understand. The game does a good job of distributing roles and offers to change positions on the field quite simply. But the gameplay is not easy to get to grips with. It takes a few hours of flying to avoid getting lost in the air looking for a golden snitch that goes much faster than us… Despite its childish graphics that are not very neat, Harry Potter Quidditch Champions looks more towards the demanding sports simulation, than the arcade for all audiences. Moreover, we will quickly go around the solo mode, to try the online game, against the champions of the whole world. But there, it will already take a minimum of dexterity not to be “stunned” at every moment.

The fact remains that the game system is a bit poor. Very quickly, the matches follow one another and resemble each other. Harry Potter Quidditch Champions does not have the depth of a FC24 or a PES in the way of a sports simulation. But it has nothing to be ashamed of, requiring certain training and uncompromising concentration to perfectly master the “quaffle” and the defense of its rings. At €30 online – and free this month for PlayStation Plus subscribers! – the title will certainly find its fans quite quickly.
