The new M3GAN film unveils its trailer but abandons theaters
Can a machine become your soul mate? Soulm8te will ultimately be offered directly on video on demand in the United States.
The universe of M3GAN continues to expand, but not as expected.
Universal Pictures has just revealed the first trailer for Soulm8tethe first spin-off of the horror franchise, while confirming that the film will ultimately not see a theatrical release in the United States.
Initially planned for theaters, the feature film was removed from Universal’s release schedule at the end of last year. The studio finally chose to broadcast directly on video on demand: Soulm8te will be available for rental on American digital platforms from August 1. No French release date has yet been announced.
Produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, the story of Soulm8te has the feel of an erotic science fiction thriller. The film follows a grieving engineer tasked with testing a new android with artificial intelligence, designed by a powerful technology company. While he tries to program the machine to make it a true soul mate, it develops its own needs and triggers a series of violence as precise as it is unexpected.
The cast brings together Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit and Arty Froushan. The production is by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother), who describes the film as an exploration “human relationships and loneliness“.
After the surprise success of M3GAN in 2023, which had grossed more than $180 million worldwide, the franchise came to a halt with M3GAN 2.0. The sequel, released last summer, only grossed $39 million at the worldwide box office.
With Soulm8teUniversal is therefore trying a new approach for this universe devoted to the excesses of artificial intelligence, by abandoning pure horror for a more adult story, centered on technology, desire and solitude.
