Avengers Doomsday: Marvel reveals the backstory of its Doctor Doom at Comic-Con

Kevin Feige had his work cut out yesterday on the Comic-Con stage.

After announcing the arrival of Ryan Gosling in Ghost Rider and the release of a Black Panther 3the head of Marvel Studios presented fans with a new trailer forAvengers: Doomsday. A video not yet posted online for the general public, but of which we already have some feedback. We know in particular that this time it focuses on Victor Von Doom and his links with the Fantastic Four.

The film confirms that Doctor Doom played by Robert Downey Jr. comes from Earth-828, the Fantastic Four universe, and not from the main reality of the MCU.

In these new images, Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) talks about her past with Victor.

“He was always the smartest in every world… He was different once. He was kind, caring… Everything he loved was taken away from him.”

She also explains that she understood that he was lost, without realizing how broken he had become.

The trailer suggests that this tragedy is at the heart of his transformation. Faced with the Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, Doom asserts:

“You have all lived stolen lives. And you refuse to give them back…“

These enigmatic words are accompanied by images of Steve Rogers with a baby, Thor with his daughter and Ant-Man with Cassie, as if the ruler of Latveria considered that the heroes had usurped their destiny by modifying space and time. At one point, Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) grabs Victor by the collar and says: “Victor…did you do this?” The answer arrives above all on the battlefield: Doom effortlessly stops Thor’s ax before summoning an army of Sentinels, now at his service.

Interviewed by Entertainment Weekly, Robert Downey Jr. explained what sets Victor Von Doom apart from Tony Stark, despite their shared scientific genius:

“There is obviously their scientific side. Both are considered geniuses. But Tony experienced a trauma that transformed him into a hero, while Doom experienced the exact opposite. It takes all the power of these characters combined to take him on, and it was a real joy to watch.“

The actor also confided that he discovered a completely new sensation after more than ten years of playing Iron Man:

“It was really strange to find myself on the other side of the villain’s mask. We feel very isolated. I saw everyone else chatting together during filming… and I was the enemy!“

Before the trailer was shown, Downey Jr. also had fun with the audience in Hall H by suggesting that Victor might also have his reasons, and that his motivations could also be understood: “Decisions will have to be made. You will have to choose the side of the good guys… or consider the alternative: join the Doom family. Come to the green side!”

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 16 in cinemas in France.
