Did you know? An endless day should have ended with a funny twist

Rita (Andie MacDowell) was at the heart of the final scene of the first script.

By dint of seeing An endless day In a loop, do you know him by heart? This is normal: since its release in 1993, the comedy of Harold Ramis has become very popular, cardboard in particular with each TV replay – he returns to celebrate, with a little bit of delay, the day of the marmot on France 5this Friday evening. But did you know that the first scenario proposed a twist different from the final version?

In the film, Phil Connors, proud weather presenter played by Bill Murray, constantly revised on February 2, aka “The day of the marmot”until he improves his behavior: it was by taking more care of others that he manages to thwart this bad fate and to charm Rita, his producer played by Andie Macdowell. When he wakes up on the morning of February 3 with the young woman by his side in his bed, he understands that the time loop has broken: everything is good that ends well.

An endless day would be on the way to be adapted in series

Except that at the origin, the scriptwriters Harold Ramis and Danny Rubin had imagined a funny twist: by waking up at the end of the film, it was Rita who became the victim of the curse! The spectator then heard him in voiceover, commenting on his inconvenience with humor, which echoed the initial opening of the film, where Phil woke up knowing already that he would relive the same day. Without an explanation, he made the public understand that he knew everything he was going to happen to him, then he later detailed in voice -over why of the how. Except that by modifying this intro and removing this explanatory voice, impossible to finish the film as planned!

This alternative version was detailed by Rubin during a sequence of questions answers on the sidelines of the projection of the cult film, in 2012 (to listen in VO here): “At the very end, Phil woke up next to Rita, as in the version we kept. Then, she hurried to leave and there we understood that she relived the day of February 3 loop. The story became hers and realizing that she was the victim of the time loop, we went to the voiceover of Rita.

An interesting idea, which also suggested that the curse could happen sexually, since it was after lying with Phil that she began to relive the same day. A bit like in It followsbut in a comic and non -horrific tone … This first end was also more open than the “Happy ending” Finally chosen. And she could also have initiated a suite brought by Andie MacDowell.
